For businesses looking to connect with customers in a lasting way, social media is an essential part of 21st century life. But I completely understand that for most business owners it feels like a hindrance more than a help – between updating your profile, responding to customers, coming up with content and sharing content – managing your social media accounts can become a full-time job.
Even though it is my full time job, it can still be tough to keep up with!
But never fear, help is at hand! In the interest of helping you get some balance back – I put together a few free/low cost tools and tips you can use if you just want to make sure you don’t leave your profiles barren while you focus on the current sales or even better, take a well deserved holiday for once!
Apps & software.
A real time saver can be pre-scheduling your posts. There are A LOT of options available on this market and the price point on them vary quite a bit! It can be tempting to go with the one which advertises the most/you are most familiar with such as Hootsuite, but if you are just dipping your toe into social this will probably have a lot of features you really don’t need yet! I would recommend trying Buffer – if you use 3 or less profiles its free to use, you can use it on an app on your phone or on desktop, it has some basic analytics on there too as well as push notifications to let you know when your feed is empty and you need to schedule some more!
TOP TIP – if you only use Facebook, you can actually schedule posts IN Facebook and save them as drafts if you are working on something that’s not quite ready. It’s a bit clumsy, but its free and great if more than one person runs the page, go on your Facebook page and look under ‘publishing tools’.
Share and share a-like!
If (like me) you write blogs, you put effort into the things you write – so you’d clearly like it to be seen by the most people possible, right? If you use WordPress (which all our websites are!) you can use a plugin to add social sharing buttons, tweet it buttons or even plugins to share your blogs/articles straight to social as and when you post them.
However, if this all sounds a bit technical – you can schedule them on your buffer account just as easily.
Make it Evergreen
Evergreen content – the busy marketers’ best friend! Evergreen content is any type of content which is not time relevant (for example – top 2019 marketing trends) which you could post again later! Not everyone on your social platforms will see your content the first time round- in fact, only as little as 10% of fans are shown a post from your company at one time on some platforms! So as long as you leave a healthy gap, there is absolutely no reason you can’t re-use some items. Best practice is to spread these out in little pieces, use them as a safety net so if you have a busy week at work – you won’t have left your social channels completely silent.
Don’t have time to create? Curate!
We’ve all heard that content is king, and it is absolutely true- but that doesn’t mean you have to create every single piece of it yourself. If you find an article relevant to your area, which your customers would find interesting- share it! As long as you practice this in moderation and you have thought carefully about how useful the information is to your customers – they will value it just as much as your own content. Also – Buffer allows you to create a posting schedule based on updates from within your network.
Remember – you can’t automate everything
It would be great if you could, but if you want your account to grow, and be a tangible part of your sales and marketing pipeline – its still essential you get involved. You need to have actual interaction with your customers whether that’s responding to comments and messages, posting recent reviews as and when you get them or posting news from the industry as and when it happens. If you really want to be valued by your customers and potential customers, this gains their trust and it can be the difference between them choosing you or the next brand.
Of course it goes without saying, this is not a full comprehensive guide to managing your marketing yourself, but it should certainly help you keep yourself visible – and when you think you want to take it up to the next level, you know where to find me!
